Organisation & its Management

West Bengal State Book Board (known in Bengali terms as "Paschimbanga Rajya Pustak Parsad") is a Government Wing under Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal and its total administrative expenses are borne by the said Department. Since inception of the Book Board, Ministry of Human Resource Development of Government of India provides full financial assistance through 'Commission for Scientific & Technical Terminology' (CSTT), towards the production and publication of the Books on the basis of proposals prepared by the State Book Board. However, it must be kept in mind that whatever assistance it may get from State or Central Government, the Book Board is academically autonomous.

The Book Board has a general body called 'Society' which is formed of the ex-officio members such as Vice-Chancellors of different Universities, representatives of different Educational Institutions/Academic Councils, different Teachers' organisations, distinguished persons of the different segments of the society, experts writing texts in Bengali, eminent Academicians and Litterateurs. And one nominee each of the University Grants Commission (UGC) & Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) are also there in the Board. General Superintendence, Direction and Control of the Society and its income and property are vested with the Board of Governors which is formed with the members of the said Society.

By Statute, Chairman of the Book Board is the Minister-in-Charge of Higher Education and Principal Secretary of Higher Education Dept. is the Vice-Chairman. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Book Board is a Govt. Official, deputed by the Higher Education Dept., who acts as the Drawing and Disbursement Officer (DDO). He/she is also the ex-officio Member-Secretary of the Society/Board of Governors. Usually he/she is an officer in the Secretary level of the State Govt. or an Academician from a government College/University.
